I'm allowed to have all my feelings, but I refuse to dissolve in them. When I start to slide into the abyss of despair, I have to make like a tree and sink my roots down into something sturdier.
Thank you for your powerful and certainly caring words! My husband and I live in Texas. We feel doomed from all directions. Reading this really helps ground me. I a roll-up-my-sleeves-and-do-something an activist. I don’t write. I’m full of gratitude that I can be a part of the Substack family. Thank you! 💕
“So let’s fucking do this together.” It’s nice to know we are not alone out here in the vast scariness that has taken over our country. Thank you for your hopefulness and your imagery about the forest. We had a big wildfire near where we live a few years ago, and I like going to see the scar and all of the new life emerging. The forest there will not be the same, for sure, but it is beautiful nonetheless. But the fire itself — the unknown in the during and aftermath — was super scary. … It’s always better to go through things with friends and as a community. … Keep writing! ❤️
Katherine, this piece is beautiful. Not just for the content, but also, to me, your writing has soared to new levels. That makes me very happy for you. I hope you are also aware of that. I also follow Susan Cain's Substack, and I think the two of you are kindred spirits and should connect if you haven't already. She would love what you are writing, and amazingly, she personally responds to comments.
I love this. And love you. My wish for everyone reading this is to know that you are just as caring and beautiful as you seem. You don’t just say these things; you do them.
Oh, thank you!

This is really beautiful. Makes me think of MLK encouraging people to be strong minded and tender hearted 🤍

I love this and so do my sisters and friends! What a beautiful thing to have such a caring and thoughtful friend in Canada!

Your mushrooms also seem so hopeful, standing tall yet vulnerable on that wall.
