A Postcard From Vacation
We’re doing it!
We’re finally taking a real family vacation.
This is our first beach trip; my first time in Mexico; our first time just (but all) seven of us.
AND WOW ARE WE SUNBURNT.
This in spite of the creams, sprays, oils, sticks, and powders of sunscreen we have applied. Our pacific northwest pale skins are in shock. (Except for Nick, who just annoyingly tans.)
But oh we are also in joy!
The street tacos with the charred onion from the handsome guy on the corner. The fresh pastries that arrive downstairs at 4. The smoothies they all go and get each morning while I sleep in. We spent hours the other day just bobbing in the ocean, marveling at how warm it was, getting tumbled in the waves. We’ve played games of cards on the twinkly patio and entertained the lady who runs the corner market with our terrible Spanish.
It didn’t make any sense to come. It’s a busy season, it’s not in the budget— but our family is in such a beautiful moment right now. Our big kids are so very big but they’re still here with us for at least this last short season; meanwhile we’re savouring the last twinges of our younger ones still being little. It all feels so poignant, right on the verge of changing.
I am so glad we came. I’m so glad we did it just for joy.
I’ll have more to say next week, but for now—
much love from vacation.

Good for you for going on this trip, Katherine! I totally get what you mean about how "it didn’t make any sense to come" - and yet, you went ahead and did it anyway. As a fellow solopreneur and mom of littles, thank you. Seriously, I need to see examples of people I respect doing the thing that doesn't always make sense on paper, but makes sense for the soul. This actually inspired me to write a new post (coming out tomorrow) on why it can be so hard to do things "just for joy." All to say, thank you again for giving us this glimpse of your adventure; I hope you have a great rest of your trip!
